SMART LAB for the GAL Terra dei Messapi: networking, training and digital tourism
Between February 2020 and January 2021 I was communication manager and project manager of the SMART TDM project for the GAL Terra dei Messapi, the Local Action Group based in Mesagne (Brindisi). GALs are public-private partnerships that manage EU rural development funds in their area. The project, which on my old website I called SMART LAB, aimed to build a network of local businesses and operators and help it grow through training and digital promotion.

The starting point
Tourism in a rural area lives on a mix of nature, history, culture and local products. To make it known, you need operators able to present themselves online, tools to work as a network and opportunities to tell the story of the area to people who do not know it.

What you can learn from this case
In territorial projects technology comes after relationships. First you need to bring together people and organisations with different interests, then you choose the tools. What is a GAL?
A GAL (Gruppo di Azione Locale, Local Action Group) is a partnership between public bodies and private organisations in a rural area that manages a local development strategy with EU funds, following the LEADER approach. The GAL Terra dei Messapi operates in the Mesagne area, in the province of Brindisi.
Why a network project between businesses?
On their own, the micro-businesses of an area have little strength in promotion and training. In a network they can share tools, skills and visibility. The most delicate part of the work is getting partners with different interests to take part for real.
