Artificial intelligence for SMEs: where to start and what to expect
I help you understand where artificial intelligence can save time or create value in your company, test it with a measurable pilot and introduce it with clear rules and trained people. The starting point is not the tool everyone is talking about: it is a concrete problem in your daily work.

I use AI every day. As CIO of Moviweb S.r.l. I have introduced automation and artificial intelligence into internal processes and client projects. As a doctoral researcher at the University of Foggia I study applications of deep learning in agriculture, a topic on which I published a systematic review in 2026; a summary is in the article on deep learning in agriculture (in Italian).
When you need it
This service fits if:
AI is used without rules
You or your staff already use generative AI tools here and there
Proposals are hard to judge
You receive offers of “AI solutions” and do not know how to assess them
Too much repetitive work
You have repetitive tasks on texts, emails, documents, quotes and product sheets and want to lighten them
Unused data
You have sales, production or customer data you cannot put to use
People to prepare
You want your staff ready to work with AI, in Italy or across teams in several countries
Examples from your sector
You work in agrifood, tourism, retail or services and are looking for cases close to your reality.
What I do
AI readiness
I assess data, processes, tools, skills and regulatory constraints to see how ready you are.
Use case map
I collect ideas from your people, rate them for value and feasibility and choose the ones to test.
Pilot project
I define goal, data, tool, indicators and success criteria, and follow the trial with my technical network.
Supplier selection
I compare ready-made solutions, customisation and custom development, with attention to recurring costs and dependence on the supplier.
Internal AI policy
Permitted tools, data that may be used, mandatory human checks, responsibilities.
EU AI Act and data protection check
Classification of uses by risk level and coordination with your DPO or data protection adviser. For a full governance framework, see AI governance and the EU AI Act.
Training
Practical programmes for owners and staff, from the basics to daily use. See Training and workshops.
If a pilot needs development work, I tell you in advance whether I am proposing Moviweb, and the choice of supplier stays with you.
How I work
Listening
In an introductory call you tell me what you already do with AI and what you would like to do.
Diagnosis
For AI readiness I carry out interviews, analysis of data and processes, and a check of constraints. I use the same approach as the digital assessment, with a focus on AI.
Plan and resources
We rate each idea for value and feasibility, and pick one or two use cases for the pilot.
Delivery and results
We run the pilot within a limited scope, with indicators measured before and after; with the figures in hand, you decide whether to scale up, adjust or stop, the decision point ISO 56001 sets for every innovation process. Roll-out covers policy, training, integration with existing systems and monitoring.
These are the four steps of the method I follow in every project.
What you get
AI readiness report
with strengths, gaps and risks.
Use case map
with priorities and estimated benefits.
Pilot project plan
and results report.
Company AI use policy
ready to share with your staff.
Compliance note
on the EU AI Act and data processing, to be completed with your data protection adviser.
Training plan
by role.
Next steps
If the project needs investment, see grants and public funding. Practical guides on AI use cases, AI readiness and the AI Act for SMEs are on the blog (in Italian).
Shall we talk for half an hour?
Tell me where you are so I understand what you need. If I can help, I send you a written quote.
How it went for a client

The digital transition of our company was followed with great professionalism at every single stage, securing us subsidised access to the grants. (translated from Italian)
Frequently asked questions
Can't find your question? Write to me and I will answer.
Does a small company really need artificial intelligence?
Not always, and not for everything. It makes sense when a repetitive task takes up hours of skilled work, such as quotes, customer replies or reading documents, or when you have data that nobody manages to analyse. An AI readiness check is there to establish whether and where it pays off, before you spend.
Can we use ChatGPT or similar tools with customer data?
Only with precautions. You need to know where the data ends up, whether the provider uses it to train its models and whether the processing complies with the GDPR. That is why I always propose an internal AI use policy: which tools, for which tasks, with which data. We define it together with your data protection adviser.
What does the EU AI Act mean for my company?
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 classifies AI systems by level of risk and applies in stages. Companies that use AI systems must already ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among the staff who operate them. Most typical SME uses fall into lower risk categories, but each case needs checking. Governance and compliance work is covered by a dedicated service.
How long does a pilot take?
We keep it short on purpose: a few weeks, one use case, indicators chosen before starting. At the end you decide whether to scale up, adjust or stop. I prefer a small pilot that works to a large project nobody uses.
Is there public funding for AI projects in Italy?
Some regional, Chamber of Commerce and national measures in Italy fund software, consultancy and training related to AI, generally for companies with a site in Italy. Their status changes often: I check it for you at the time of the analysis. No one can guarantee approval: the decision rests with the funding body.
