Digital assessment and roadmap: know where you stand before you invest
A digital assessment measures how well your company uses technology, data and digital processes. The roadmap turns that picture into a list of actions ranked by priority, with indicative costs, timing and possible funding sources. It is the starting point I recommend to almost every SME, and to any group that is acquiring or opening a business in Italy: before buying software, you know where your money goes and why.

Engineer and Innovation Manager, I work with you directly
- UNI 11814 Innovation Manager · Apave no. 38-M
- Licensed engineer, Lecce no. 4603
- Listed by MISE as innovation manager in 2019
- Working with SMEs since 2014
I use a structured assessment model based on the principles of the ISO 56000 family and on the ISO 56004 guidance on innovation management assessment, scaled to the size of a small company.
When you need it
The assessment fits if:
You need to measure a gap
You feel the company has fallen behind but cannot say how far or where
Too many proposals on the table
You have offers from several suppliers and do not know which to prioritise
Software to choose
You are about to adopt an ERP, a CRM or an e-commerce platform and want to start from processes, not from the demo
Funding in view
You want to apply for an Italian or EU digitalisation scheme and need a solid project
A newly acquired business
You have inherited or bought a company in Italy and need to understand its digital side quickly, or you want a technology view as part of due diligence before the deal.
It works for micro and small businesses as well as larger organisations: the number of interviews changes, the logic does not.
What I do
I analyse six areas:
Strategy and governance
Goals, who decides on digital investments, how return is measured.
Processes
Sales, purchasing, production or service delivery, administration, logistics. Where there are manual steps, double data entry, spreadsheets holding the company together.
Customers and market
Website, e-commerce, social channels, CRM, handling of leads and quotes.
Data
What data you collect, where it is stored, who uses it to make decisions.
Technology and security
Systems in use, integrations, cloud, backups, access, basic cybersecurity.
People and skills
Who uses what, with which difficulties, what training is needed.
For each area I assign a maturity level and note risks and opportunities. Where it makes sense, I also check readiness for artificial intelligence: see Artificial intelligence for SMEs.
How I work
Listening
In an introductory call we define the scope: the whole company or a specific area. I then send you a short list of documents: organisation chart, systems in use, IT contracts, key figures on turnover and staff.
Diagnosis
I meet management and the heads of each area on site, and observe how work is really done, not only how it should be done. I assign maturity levels and identify bottlenecks and areas of opportunity.
Plan and resources
I propose a roadmap of actions in order of priority, split into quick actions and structured projects, with indicative budget and timing.
Delivery and results
I present the results to you and, if you wish, to your team or headquarters. We decide together what to approve.
These are the four steps of the method I follow in every project.
What you get
Assessment report
with the maturity level of each area and a one-page summary.
Map of critical processes
showing where time is lost or errors are made.
Digital roadmap
for the short and medium term: actions, priorities, dependencies, indicative budget, timeline.
Quick wins
actions you can start right away with limited spending.
Overview of compatible funding
with the status of each measure at the time of analysis.
Baseline indicators
to compare in a year’s time.
Next steps
If you want to start on your own, take the digital maturity test: in a few minutes you get an initial score. When the roadmap is ready, the next step is usually finding the right funding scheme or support from an innovation manager. Further guides on the digital transformation of SMEs and on reading a digitalisation roadmap are available on the blog (in Italian).

Frequently asked questions
Can't find your question? Write to me and I will answer.
What is the difference between the online test and the assessment?
The digital maturity test on this site is a quick self-assessment: it gives you an idea of your level and weak points. The assessment is carried out by me, with interviews and a review of your processes and data. The result is a report and a tailored roadmap you can use to decide on investments and to support a funding application.
How much time does it take from my staff?
Not much. Usually a meeting with management and short interviews with the heads of each area, plus access to the documents and systems you use. I schedule interviews so that daily work does not stop. Interviews can be held in English or Italian, on site in Italy or remotely.
Can you assess a company we plan to acquire in Italy?
Yes, as part of your due diligence. I assess processes, systems, data, security and skills, and estimate the investment needed to bring the business up to your standards. Legal, tax and financial due diligence remain with your advisers; I coordinate with them on the points where technology affects their findings.
Does the roadmap commit me to buying from you?
No. The roadmap states what to do, in what order and with what indicative budget. You can deliver it with any supplier or with your own staff. If you wish, I can also support you during delivery, but that is a separate decision.
